Talk for Writing

Talk for Writing – the key to raising attainment

Talk for Writing, developed by Pie Corbett supported by Julia Strong, is powerful because it is based on the principles of how children learn.

Talk for Writing enables children to copy the key language they need for a particular topic orally before they try reading and analysing it. Through fun activities that help them rehearse the tune of the language they need, followed by shared writing to show them how to craft their writing, children are helped to write in the same style. At Manor Infant schools we have adopted the approach to increase the children’s progress.

Talk for Writing is powerful because it enables children to imitate the language they need for a particular topic orally before reading and analysing it and then writing their own version. A brief explanation of the basic principle of Talk for Writing builds on 3 key stages:

Stage 1- Imitation                Stage 2 - Innovation            Stage 3 - Invention
